COMPOSITION

The Tale of 2020

One morning, many, many, moons past when great-great-great Koko was your cycle is the last that Yir Faw Nde wandered throughout our earth. Then, the people used numbers to measure time, and it was known as the year Twenty-Twenty.

What does paying attention look like as a creative action? And how can I make this performative?

This was my thought as I tuned into the first movement of the score. There was this deep sense of every story shared being a reflection of people simply tapping into the needs of their community. And the depth of their compassion and giving was honest, visceral and conscious.

They were

aware

genuine,

sensitive

embodied great depth of warmth

and rooted.

It also required great strength of character too because everyone was at their most vulnerable in the midst of supporting others. So, the journey to my response to the first movement began with hands, a tree and an energy wave.

This was also a real challenge for me throughout this project because I generally don’t create from a place of chaos. And like most people last year was challenging in so many ways and visual art had never been a form of emotive release, writing does that for me, but I kept visualising trees.  I sought to find a connection through trees in all of the countries mentioned in the tuning and used elements of trees indigenous to North America, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, and the UK to shape the tree (Bottle Tree – Barcelona Gingko Bilbao – Tokyo Cherry Blossom – S Korea, Angel Oak – North America, Marula – South Africa, Yew – UK. I was also curious about the nature of trees and discovered the psychology of trees, particular the attributes of the ‘mother tree’ was similar to the many voices heard in the global stories.

Enjoy!

THE FINAL SYMPHONY

‘Sounding Together’

This 25-minute piece ‘Sounding Together’ from chaos to catharsis, was created by six Artist Composers in response to the stories, pain, hope, and actions from around the world, collected during SIX Wayfinder 2020. Their collaboration spanned four months across time-zones, only ever meeting over Zoom, using a collage of iphone recordings and makeshift studio set ups during lockdown, from Singapore, Poland, Greece, UK and Canada. The piece is a collective inquiry into the question: "What is the shape of social innovation in urgent times and what sounds can help us reimagine our way forward together?".
